Learn How To Increase The Battery Life Of Your Smartphone

Overview: The battery is one of the most—if not the most—important parts of your smartphone. If it doesn’t work anymore, your phone is as good as dead, unless you replace it, which is next to impossible for some smartphones like the iPhone. All you really have to do is take care of your phone, but for more practical advice, continue reading.

Many smartphone users are very disappointed when they can’t use their smartphones 24/7. Most smartphones require at least one charge per day. Well, what if your device does not last for at least 8 hours?

Do you always use your smartphone and you’ve noticed that it only lasts around six hours? Well then, you need these tips that can help you save battery power.

Display

The display drains the most out of your smartphone’s battery. Obviously, the brighter it is, the more power it requires. Limit the brightness so that the battery uses less power; giving your phone enough power for the day. It is very common for smartphones nowadays to have a light sensor. This adjusts the screen brightness automatically, depending on the light condition. You should know that when you are in a very bright place, your smartphone will be sacrificing much of its battery life to increase the brightness of its display.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Connectivity

Everything that works on your smartphone drains power, including its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It is better to disable the Wi-Fi if you are not using it. Most smartphones look for and connect to any public Wi-Fi network, so your smartphone would be wasting its battery if you are not even close to a network.

GPS & Location Notifications

GPS, like Wi-Fi, also drains your smartphone’s battery life. Although it is great to add your current location to a tweet, it will also greatly affect your smartphone’s battery life. Better avoid GPS-dependent maps apps to save battery life.

For some smartphones, there are apps or web pages that try to get your location. They will prompt you to permanently allow them to use GPS. If you think that your current location is not really necessary for everything you do on your smartphone, then you’d better disable your GPS.

Power-Heavy Apps

The Android and iOS operating systems have different takes on multitasking. Using the iOS, the app freezes when you open another one. Android is almost the same, but apps can still stay active in the background, so they also use battery power even though they are not in use. Get an app manager from the app library. App managers stop unwanted apps from starting when you open your smartphone. Most managers even manage the battery power. You can also use an app killer, but sometimes this is not helpful because most apps use more power during start-up than staying in the background.

Vibration and Notifications

Your phone requires a lot of power to be set on vibrate instead of a simple tone alert, so you should disable this function. Moreover, notifications also consume power whenever they switch on your smartphone or make it buzz. If you just ignore these notifications, then it is better to disable them too, except maybe those that you find efficient or important.

Additional Tips

  • Rooting and Jailbreaking

You can also save a lot of power if you jailbreak your iPhone or root your Android smartphone. Rooting allows you to replace your operating system with something that will not be a burden to your smartphone and that will not consume too much power. Moreover, rooting and jailbreaking lets you install apps that are not available in the app library but are very useful for your phone, like the SB Settings that offers immediate access to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and NFC.

  • Avoiding Heat and Cooling It Down

Heat is one of the primary enemies of your smartphone’s battery. Heat can decrease your gadgets battery life from 24 hours to 8 hours or worse, 2 hours, permanently. Why? Most batteries are Lithium Ion. Too much heat (above 95 degrees Fahrenheit) can significantly decrease the lifespan of your battery. If you go overboard, your device’s capacity can shrink by 35%. Avoid exposing your phone to heat. Cool it down and you will be thankful that you did.

Conclusion

If you follow the tips above, your battery will retain its long life. If you notice it still consumes too much power, it might mean that you need to charge it more. You might also need new batteries.
