2012 Jobs: The Rise Of Social Media Consultants

Considering the difficulty in finding jobs in previous years, finding any job will be top of a lot of people’s To-Do lists of 2012.  Thanks to the advent of social networking in general, the increasing popularity of social media has seen a sudden increase in social media job vacancies. Consequently, the rise of social media consultants is one of the most unintended results of Facebook.

Before the emergence of Facebook, the very phrase “social media consultant” made little or no sense to the average person. However, businesses have now identified social networks as a credible way to market their products and services. Better still, private individuals are also now making a living advising companies and small businesses on how to better use Facebook and other social networking sites.

Today, the average social media consultant focuses on transforming organizations through social media by helping companies and businesses use social technologies to connect people within their organisations. The overall aim is to help promote and build some sort of intra-organisational community feeling for example, by assisting workers who are doing mutually beneficial things to know of each other’s work and to get in touch to share ideas and skills.

Perhaps another obvious application of social media consultancy is in marketing. As a result of what could be called ‘the Facebook effect’, companies and organisations around the world can use the site for targeted advertising and marketing which can be based on the extremely exact demographic data volunteered by an individual. Before the advent of social media, such efforts were only based on a mixture of what is known as educated guessing and expensive research. However, there is now an audience that makes itself a target and inadvertently responsible for the rise of social media consultants in the twenty-first century.

I love the social media because it allows us all to communicate with each other rather than feeling lonely when we are not physically in the same room together with other human beings. Human communication and relationships are very important. This leads me to say that as an educator myself, I would not favor electronic means of communicating with students. I feel that in person communication, where a student can get emotional feelings from the warmth and caring attitude of a teacher, is something that can have beneficial effects that last a lifetime.

It’s natural to be like this. Marketing is a science in constant evolution, so jobs in this domain evolve as well. But let me put it this way: the more attention you’ll give to social media consultants, the more money they’ll charge you for their help.

It is true, it seems like there is a huge demand on all kinds of jobs that are related to internet marketing – and especially to social media marketing. On the other hand, I’m not really sure if that’s really such an easy way to make a lot of money. Just take a look at sites like Fiverr.com or oDesk.com what people are willing (and cpable) to do for only a few dollars.

The demand is growing fast but these kinds of jobs have a lot of competition.
It’s easy to outsource to India, where they can afford to work for less money.
Also a lot of great deals on elance and fiverr.
With so much competition it is hard to get good payment without working really hard.

Social media has really grown and continues to evolve. The good new is its opened up an industry and is creating jobs. The question is what does it take to get these jobs?

My understanding is that Google has already incorporated social media signals in the ranking algorithm. However, this process is in its infancy. As soon as it becomes more apparent that social media impact rankings heavily, social media consultants will be in even higher demand…

Google+ is definitely an area of social media that will provide value to companies. I think now is the time to get involved, as Google have historically taken age of websites into accounts, so an established profile will already start gaining trust value for the future.

The overlap between social media and SEO is reaching a point that any online consultant will need to be up-to-date with both areas, and the rapid changes here are where specialists can shine – as not every business owner will have the time or resources to follow all the developments.

You’ve presented a good data above!

I would like to add that a real social media consultant is well versed in not only Facebook. He needs to have knowledge on various social networking sites, like Twitter and LinkedIn, because being dedicated to only Facebook is limited your choices. Also, a person who uses Facebook a lot does not necessarily know how to use it to help someone else build an online presence.

There are consultants for pretty much everything where good advice and guidance can be given, so why not in the area of social media and networking? If they know their area well, then the benefits an organization can get out of their social media consultant will be beyond what they could accomplish on their own.

For sure, I totally agree with the article. Facebook and twitter are so popular now that social media needs to be managed. Social media managers have to be very skilled in wheat they do because if they let the wrong tweet or Facebook comment out, it could tarnish the brand image, sometimes forever. So be careful what you ….tweet 😉

oops…One more quick note about social media managers

some salaries of social media managers can be quite high, but In order to get there, you will most likely have to do social media management for many small companies (at the same time) receiving small amounts of money from each company, until your resume or experience warrants you a full time job with a large company.
    Thank you
    Ron
