The Importance Of Keywords and How To Use Them For Your Local Business

With the advanced online technology available for people to use nowadays, people shop, research, and look up whatever they want by simply typing a word or phrase into search engines such as Google, Yahoo, YouTube and more. Those words typed into the search engine are known as keywords. For those who use marketing online for their local business, keywords are vital. They’re the way people find what it is you’re marketing.

If you already have a website for your local business, and didn’t know about the importance and usage of keywords, don’t fret because you are likely unknowingly already using keywords so search engines are able to find your site. Keywords can be found in a variety of text such as headings, inbound links, text within the page, among other areas. Most business websites are going to include content about the business, industry, etc. and within that content is most likely at least a few keywords people use to find your type of business, or your specific business, online.

But now that you are aware of the importance of keywords, you can take an active approach and make sure you use plenty of them to get found online. After all, keywords are the focal point on whether or not your local business website is found. By using the right keywords, your site is more likely to be found through search engines. When looking at what you should be using as keywords, there are some factors to consider.

  • Make sure that the words or phrases you want to use as keywords have a good amount of search volume.
  • Make sure that the keywords you chose are relevant.
  • Learn more about the different levels of relative competition.
  • Prioritize Keywords:
    • Consider the competitive advantage for the services or products your local business offers.
    • Consider keywords and their association with the products or services and their profitability.

It may be wise to make a list of keywords that may be relevant to your local business site. Consider using anything that you feel is important and what people will search for such as;

  • Brands.
  • Product names.
  • Service names.
  • Product and/or brand related keywords.

Also when trying to decide on keywords, consider talking with customers to learn what words they use as a keywords when using a search engine. Consider looking at competitor’s sites to learn what they may use as keywords. Add the area your local business focuses on, such as Pittsburg Painting for example, where Pittsburg is used as a geographic pinpoint of where your local business may be. Adding descriptive words may be wise as well, such as canvas painters for example. Google has a tool you can use called Google AdWords Keyword Tool that allows you to enter the words you may want to use, and the tool will give you suggestions.

These tips will allow you to begin your quest on finding what kind of text is relevant to use on your local business webpage as keywords. And if you haven’t already, start today to make sure your online presence is keyword dense to greatly improve your chances of getting found online!

    Great article!

I would like to add that when using google adwords keyword tool. to change the setting from broad to [exact] so you get the real number of people searching for that keyword.
It wont be nice if you expect 1000 visitors a month when you are number one for one keyword just to find out the actual amount is only 100 visitors a month. 🙂

Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

    Chris,

Great post. I agree, that’s why a lot of people do a lot of keyword research before using them on their site, they want to use the ones that are searched the most so that it can translate to their site as well. It’s one of the basics of making a website.

Also with googles recent change to make long tailed keywords more reflective in their search terms these should be used as much as possible. Long tailed keywords are generally very highly targeted.

You can also figure out how people found your site // blog by using statistics – the most popular entries would give already a good basis where to go and which keywords to develop 🙂
And then comes of course the internal content optimisation – to reflect these key words // phrases 🙂
