HTC Evo 3D: Bringing The Third Dimension To Smartphones

If you are looking for a new phone, the HTC Evo 3D might be worth the wait. It will hit stores during the summer of 2011, although no specific date has been announced yet. The design and features are similar to the original Evo, but the 3D version comes with many new features and enhancements – most notably the ability to view photos and images in 3D.

HTC Evo 3D Features

  • Screen – The Evo 3D has a large, 4.3 inch touchscreen with a customizable, touch-sensitivity level. The display also auto-rotates depending on the way you hold the phone, which comes in handy when browsing the Internet and using certain apps. The Evo 3D even comes with high resolution graphics (540 x 960 pixels) for a better video viewing experience.
  • Camera – There is a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front of the Evo 3D for video calling, but one thing that makes this phone so impressive is the two 5 megapixel cameras on the back for taking 3D videos and pictures. There is a switch next to the dedicated camera button that allows you to switch between 2D and 3D videos and photos.
  • Memory – The Evo 3D runs on the Android OS v2.3 (Gingerbread) with a 1.2 GHZ dual core processor. It has 1GB of ram and 4GB of internal memory, which can be expanded to 32 GB with a microSD card. There is practically and unlimited amount of contacts and call record storage available.
  • Battery – With seven and a half hours of talk time and up to 355 hours of standby, the average user should have no complaints about the battery life of the Evo 3D. An extended battery is available, although it does make the phone thicker.
  • Apps – The HTC Evo 3D is an Android based phone, so it comes with access to the ever-growing Android market. You’ll find all of the standard apps for social networking and email, as well as a vast selection of games and productivity tools.

The 3D Viewing Experience

The HTC Evo 3D is only the second smartphone to have 3D capabilities (The first was the LG Optimus 3D), but the effects are impressive nonetheless. The images appear to float right off the screen – you just have to make sure you are holding the phone at the right angle.

htc-evo-3dMany people consider 3D capabilities to be a bit of a gimmick, but it is definitely fun to play with. The cameras allow you to take 3D videos and pictures, and many apps have been designed specifically for the 3D functionalities. Plus, the best part about the 3D viewing experience on the Evo 3D is that you don’t have to wear 3D glasses. This has been the downfall of 3D TVs for a while.

Other Notable Features Of The HTC Evo 3D

  • Swipe – Some people are hesitant to buy a smartphone without a keyboard, but swipe makes inputting text a breeze. All you have to do is drag your finger from one letter to the next to spell out words. It many cases, this is faster than using the standard smartphone keyboard anyway.
  • Predictive Text – As if Swipe wasn’t enough, if you input a word incorrectly, a menu will pop up with possible corrections to make inputting text even faster. This is also a handy feature for people who are poor at spelling.
  • Geo Location Sensors – This smartphone eliminates the need for a separate GPS device because it has a sensitive geo-locator and numerous apps to help you find your way around no matter where you are in the world. There are also fun apps that allow you to “check-in” at certain locations to let people know where you are.
  • Wireless Hotspot Capability – for an additional charge, you can connect up to eight additional devices to the Internet by creating a WiFi spot.
  • Simultaneous Voice and Data Capabilities – You can surf the Internet or use apps at the same time you are making a call.

The HTC Evo 3D is a fast phone and it received the Best Smartphone Award at CTIA 2011. With the vast Android app market and the high-tech features on this device, there is no reason why it wouldn’t do well in the market. If you can hold out a little longer, this would be a great phone to purchase.

I really wish my smartphone had the swipe text; it’s important when you have chubby fingers and no keyboard. I am a little skeptical about a 3D phone, though. As fun as it sounds, how beneficial is it to have everything in three dimension? And I wonder the same thing, too, Travis. Smartphones have the worst battery lives!

Based on the 3DS, I’m also skeptical that the batteries will last very long and wonder what the functionality is really good for other than gaming…

It will be a fun phone to show off to your friends though.

My friend has this bad boy and I took a quick peek. Not exactly 3D… it is more stereoscopic looking and you have to be looking at the screen at a certain angle. It’s cool though but I think I’ll wait for the iphone 4S-D. (…don’t want to start any rumors now. LOL)
