Adult Websites Get Final Domain Approval

icann_logoSex domain, .xxx, has finally received approval from Internet overseer, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), to make way for dedicated domain names to pornography. The approval brings to an end a 10-year battle to create a top level “.xxx” domain similar to the already existing “.com”, “.biz” and “.org” domains.

Although initial approval was given last year, a final decision was delayed so as to carry out further consultation checks on what has been tagged ‘the virtual red light district’. Following the decision, ICANN will now sign an agreement with the ICM Registry.

While those in support of the decision claim that a separate .xxx domain name will make it easier to filter out inappropriate content such as porn and adult movies from the Internet, others worry that the move to classify similar content will taint their image or for some others, legitimize the content of these sites.

Talking Point

Do you support the approval of an exclusive “.xxx” domain for adult-related content on the Internet?

I say why not give it a try. In my opinion, ALL adult websites should be moved to this domain. Back in the days when I grew up, pornographic materials were kept on the top shelf and made unavailable to children. There is no control over keeping adult sites out of the eyes of children. Maybe this is a good start of someday having an Internet that is free of porn on .com and other normal domains that are accessible to the general population.

I guess that could make it easier for parents to filter out porn sites on home computers etc.
