Over 80 Websites suspected of selling fake goods and services, including those offering pirated content have been shut down by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. Websites affected by the closure include a BitTorrent search engine, music download sites and online shopping sites selling counterfeit designer clothing. Although, the ICE could not provide specific details, it stated that the seizures were part of an ongoing investigation into copyright infringement and trafficking in counterfeit goods.
Affected domains include the following: torrent-finder.com, louis-vuitton-outlet-store.com, dvdcollectionsale.com, burberryoutletshop.com, cheapscarfshop.com, rapgodfathers.com, sunglasses-mail.com, mydreamwatches.com and handbag.com. Visitors to any of these domains will no longer be able to purchase goods and will be met by a message that states that the domain has been seized by ICE based on laws relating to copyright infringement and trafficking in counterfeit goods. Generally, ICE’s actions did not currently involve content removal, rather it simply took control of the domain name that was being used by these sites. This meant that the affected sites could still be accessed via an IP address or a change of domain name. It is therefore not surprising that there are already reports that many of the affected sites are continuing to trade via alternative Web addresses.
