As competition increases from the likes of Google, Facebook and Microsoft, Yahoo Inc. has stepped up efforts to make its services more relevant and competitive in the thriving Internet services market. Thus, the organisation is undergoing the biggest re-design of its free e-mail service in five years, in a bid to catch up with its main rivals and encourage users to spend more time on its Website.

With over 270 million worldwide users, the revamped Yahoo! Mail will implement changes that will turn it into more of a message hub and make it more compatible with social media as a whole.  Therefore, Yahoo! e-mail users will be able to post updates to Facebook and Twitter whilst simultaneously reading their email with speeds that the organisation claims will be twice as fast as Google Mail and MSN Hotmail. Furthermore, users will be able to view pictures and videos from the likes of Flickr, Picasa and YouTube from inside their mailbox.

Other features of the face lift includes a complete speed boost, better spam filtering, a more advanced search system and mail priority tools to make organising messages easier. Users will have a choice to switch to the new look Yahoo! mail, in a testing period that is expected to last until the end of 2010.

Talking Point

Do you think this latest upgrade will help prevent more Yahoo! mail users from discontinuing with the service?

I think they will find it hard to acquire new users since GMAIL has been a stable for so many users. Plus, there’s a cost to changing email providers. This change might even detract some of their users since most of them are used to the old interface

I have to admit, I kind of prefer Gmail for NOT interfacing with social media hubs more. Google already tried that with Buzz, and that went over like a lead balloon. not everything has to have a Facebook plug-in, ya know?

Lol, Agreed. It’s almost as if the success of Facebook since 2004 has taken them all by storm and now everyone wants to be a part of it.

I think the new upgrade we help them to retain some users and encourage new user to join. If the new service is users friendly than gmail and hotmail.
