Nintendo has announced that the 3DS will be released in Japan in February (26) and the United States and Europe in March, 2011. Although some consumers expected the latest Nintendo hand-held to be launched during the festive season, this announcement is still a welcome development.

One unique feature of the 3DS is that while current 3-D games for the PlayStation 3 and those that use NVIDIA’s 3-D Vision technology add special 3D effects to PC titles, the Nintendo 3DS does not require the use of stereoscopic glasses. Gamers would also not have to pay for hardware upgrades such as a 3D television or custom graphic cards although the functions will be supported in addition to on-demand game updates and downloads via Wi-Fi connection.Other features include, an option to use the device as a camera, converting friends’ photos into personalised virtual avatars and wireless communication with other Nintendo 3DS gadgets.

Already publishers such as Namco, Ubisoft and Activision have shown interest in developing games such as, Resident Evil, Mario Kart, Sonic the Hedgehog and Metal Gear Solid, for the device. More original 3-D games that will further boost mobile gaming experience for users are also expected in the near future.

Talking Point

Can the Nintendo 3DS technology change three-dimensional gaming for good?

  1. Enjoy the Nintendo, from the 1st Game Boy I received to the Dsi I now hold. Smashing hand-held with a very large choice of games to run. I think I am using my 5th version handheld today. Read that Nintendo produced a financial loss this yr.Upbeat that this would bring out a reduction in the cost of the Wii so I could purchase 1. No such luck. Looks that the kids will have to hold back for another year. Its not only the price of the Wii but it involves different games cartridges additionalldges additionall

  2. I still remember playing the old school games of Mario and Zelda on the Super Nintendo system back in the 90’s, but playing 3D games and without glasses sounds a whole new experience.
I think it’s a winner – Microsoft and Sony fought each other while Nintendo worked and manufactured this great device.
Wonder what other games will feature on it, no more portable PS for me.
