YouTube Live Streaming Trial Begins

YouTube has begun a trial of its live video-streaming technology. The tests will be carried out over two days (13-14 September) on the video-sharing site by four media partners – Howcast, Rocketboom, which has said it would be showing an hour-long variety show similar to those seen on television, Next New Networks, and Young Hollywood – who will get the chance to broadcast live programmes. The new platform will integrate live streaming directly into YouTube channels with a Live Comments module that will let viewers engage with the broadcaster and the wider YouTube community.

YouTube Interactive Live Scheduler

The alpha testing and subsequent launch of live streaming is seen as a bid by YouTube to provide broadcasters with an opportunity to serve users with on-demand television programming  while also broadcasting live TV events such as sports and music concerts. Although YouTube has shown one-off live events in the past such as, President Obama’s first State of the Union address, a U2 concert and Indian Premier cricket matches, this trial is expected to help partners stream a continuous service in the long run.

When in full operation, the live programming system is anticipated to be exclusively open to YouTube media partners rather than individual users.

Talking Point

Do you see YouTube Live Channel becoming as successful as other Live Internet broadcasters such as, Livestream, Justin.tv and Ustream?

I agree with abdominoplasty that every single user must have stable and fast internet connection to make the live streaming very effective. I doubt if everybody can afford to have that kind of connection especially in some places. But, like what the admin said, this feature is only available to other media partners only so no big deal at all.
