The life span of an average laptop battery is usually between two to three years although only a few actually last that long. Depending on your Laptop brand, replacing batteries could prove to be quite expensive or difficult. However, by putting a simply maintenance strategy in place, you can actually increase the life span of your battery and make it last longer. The following are 5 basic ways to protect and maintain just about any laptop battery:

  1. Ensure that the battery is always clean, particularly the charging nodes of the battery. Doing so ensures that the battery charges properly.
  2. Make sure that the battery does not get in contact with water or any form of liquid.
  3. Avoid unnecessary over-heating by ensuring proper ventilation.
  4. Protect your battery from fall as this can damage the battery’s internal structure.
  5. Always use the right charger as incompatible charges could damage not only the battery but also some of your laptop’s hardware.
  6. Check and adjust the power settings through the control panel (if necessary) so as to make full use of its energy saving mode.

There is no doubt that there are several benefits that can be derived from carrying out proper laptop-battery maintenance and following all of the above guidelines but arguably the most important benefit is saving cost. So then, stop over-charging and give your battery the care and attention it deserves. This will not only help you maximise your laptop-battery life but also save you a few pennies.

So many people come to me with laptop power issues caused by “ebay-type” generic chargers they bought to replace the genuine chargers that came with the computer. These chargers might work for a while but are bad news in the long run. I highly recommend everyone replace their laptop batteries and chargers with genuine parts specific to the manufacturer of the laptop.

  2. I’ll echo the advice to get genuine charges. I was one of those folks that used the generic brand and ended up paying for it with a new laptop when it went haywire and power surged my laptop….after being out of warrenty of course.

  3. Never thought that there’s a way to take care of your laptop-battery. That’s why my old laptop had its battery damaged and it cause me to buy new battery. From now on i have to follow this steps to maximize my battery life and at the same time to save few pennies. Thank you! Great Tips!

  4. That’s why my battery life now doesn’t make it to 1hr. I always leave my charger plugged in. I bought a new battery and searched the net on how to make your laptop battery last longer. And then that’s it i found this. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Really useful tips Kyle – I knew a lot of them, but the first one in particular taking the battery actually out when you´re plugging it in is one which I didnt know and its probably the most important one! Is it okay to constantly have your computer attached to the charger if the battery is out? And does running the battery all the way down then all the way up again help at all?

  6. The suggestion to not keep the charger plugged in all of the time is a good one. I also suggest a good idea is to buy a laptop pad to aid in cooling the laptop. Heat is a killer of batteries.

  7. Thanks for your article. I also believe that laptop computers have gotten more and more popular nowadays, and now are usually the only sort of computer employed in a household. It is because at the same time actually becoming more and more very affordable, their working power is growing to the point where they are as potent as personal computers out of just a few years back.

  8. Thank you for the tips. I haven’t replaced my laptop batter since I purchased it. Well, it’s still pretty new actually. Around 2 years old. I just make it a point to drain it every once in a while. I also make sure it’s not attached whenever I’m not using it.
