Many years ago writers have to go through several difficult steps to get their books published. After going through the difficult task of imagination and writing, many have to acquire a sort of Writer’s directory and send lots of letters to potential agents and publishers which more often than not come back in the form of frustrating rejection letters. Well, fast forward to 2010 and what you observe is that thanks to the advent of the Internet, an increasing number of writers are now turning to self-publishing their work.

Why Self-Publishing Is A Big Deal

The number one reason why self-publishing is now in vogue is that it makes a lot of economic sense. An average paperback is quite expensive considering printing fees, book royalty and other charges. However, today, a completed manuscript can be easily formatted and made available on the Internet at less than half the price via Web platforms such as eBay and Amazon with the writer making a higher percentage of the profit.

In addition, due to the vast reach of the world wide Web, the potential of reaching a wider audience is a lot higher and books can be sold on a print-on-demand basis. This also increases the possibility of eventually selling the book to a bigger publishing house once its sales potential has been established.

Talking Point

Is the Internet really a threat to traditional publishers and what role do publishers play when purchasing a book?

  1. Internet have makes a lot of things very easy and convince. You can sit in your home and buy anything you need from anywhere in the world. Self-Publishing is now a big business on the web now, and it is doing very well, with lot of writer’s now sell books on the web.

  2. I recommend self-publishing to my clients. They need to know that getting an agent and a publisher does not neccesarily make them famous. In fact, agents, publishers, and Oprah only accept one to two percent of unknown authors.Self-publishing offers fast, easy formatting, book design and other book services to the author for a relatively low price..

  3. I guess self publishing your books will effect established publishers the same way blogs are destroying news papers.
If you think about it J.K.Rowling (Harry Potter) was rejected by 12 publishers. If she would have given up after the 10th she would still live of welfare.

    1. You raise a very interesting and perhaps controversial point when you say “blogs are destroying newspapers”. I wonder why you say that and if anyone else shares this view?

  4. Internet is really one of the great things that happen to the life of an individual especially to many writers.. no doubt on that.. and i think those things that are happening to our lives is the product of those people who have that skills to improve not only his/her own life but to all the people around the globe.

  5. Thanks a lot for enjoying this beauty article with me. I am enjoy it very much! Looking forward to another great article. Good luck to the author! all the best!

  6. A publisher does everything for you, however a large portion of the earnings is going to be paid to your publisher. Yet just before that takes place, the publisher must be convinced that the book is going to sell wonderfully; otherwise it is really not worth his hard work. This is why, nearly all aspiring writers deal with rejections all the time. Then again, that doesn’t imply one must quit. Here is when self publishing is a great option.
