Google Debuts Custom Homepages

Google is set to make the experience of users a little more interesting than usual as the world’s most popular search engine introduces advanced personalisation by allowing  people to add a favourite photo or random image to the background of the Google homepage. A statement from the organisation’s blog states that this is in continuation of Google’s bid to make the search experience “more relevant, useful and fun through personalization”.

While personalisation is not exactly new in Web search engines such as Bing, Ask.com or even iGoogle, it is still a welcome addition. Users will be able to use any of the following three options to upload an image background of their choice (e.g. yours, a loved one, an art work or favourite holiday destination) on the Google homepage:

  • Directly from a computer
  • From a personal Picasa Web Album
  • From a public gallery hosted by Picasa

Google has already started rolling out this new feature to users in the United States (it can be found in the lower left-hand corner of Google.com) while international users will be able to view and use it in the coming days or weeks. In addition, users will also be able to switch easily between a customised search page and the classic Google page.

Talking Point

What are your first thoughts about this latest Google addition and will you use it?

It’s nice to see a feature like this, but I don’t think the web is quite ready for it yet. The full screen background will take quite a while to load on most people’s computers.

Thanks for taking the time on this, I was searching everywhere for something similar, but this has proven to be just as helpful.
