As YouTube celebrates its five year anniversary, it confirmed that the video streaming site now receives more than two billion hits a day. This is almost double the number of people who tune into America’s three prime time television stations combined. The figure is even more remarkable when you consider the fact that YouTube was only just celebrating reaching one billion hits per day seven months ago.

YouTube Milestones

  • 8 million views a day – December 2005
  • 10 hours of video uploaded per minute – January 2008
  • 1 billion views a day – October 2009
  • 24 hours worth of video uploaded per minute – March 2010

YouTube has made significant improvements since it first video was published (Watch video below) 5 years ago. The Website now has a more robust way of handling illegal uploads, introduced online captions and introduced new ways of generating revenue. There is however more room for improvement and additional changes are bound to happen in the near future in order to maintain its status as the Worlds number one video streaming platform.

This figure suggests that YouTube is probably an untapped source of traffic for many Website authors. You don’t need to be told, simply comparing the percentage of YouTube traffic you receive to 2 billion hits shows that there is still more work to be done.

I thinkf that Google TV has a mass of capability, but also has the potential to fall. I’m hoping that everything progresses alright though. From what I have viewed, Google TV is something I would really like to get.

Next step for youtube? It would be really cool if they would be able to come up with a way to have youtube TV. I mean, a lot of people spend time on youtube than on TV these days. It could be a hit.
