Essential Advice for Yoga Teacher Training

Best part about training to be an instructor is shattering those doubts and coming to realize that you are capable and those doubts in your head were lying the whole time.

You might have considered taking yoga training several times since your first practice. But you haven’t done it yet, but will sometime. It’s on your plans. Even if you’re not there yet, many others are, and as with any new venture, questions and doubts are aplenty. The major question you are faced with is likely: what would a yoga teacher’s advice be to another prospective teacher?

Find a studio you love where you admire the instructors and attend as many classes as you can just because you like the way they teach. Take it up with them if they don’t have a teacher training program! During Yoga teacher training you’re sure to figure out the direction you would like to take the practice forward. You’re sure to learn so much about yourself and make lifelong friends in the process. At times it can be a leap, but if you love the thrill of not knowing what’s up next, you are all set to go through so many stunning transitions! As long as you stick to your path, you’ll be changing and growing, eventually turn to look back at the starting point and laugh in wonder. Kicking off is the hardest part, but it also promises the largest reward.

Another advice would be to doubt your thoughts. Most people, including yours truly often feel isolated in being anxious or nervous about doing something. Remember, it is important to realize that you are not alone in this. Many of us have anxiety about public speaking, wondering if we know enough about yoga, or even if we are strong enough to become a yoga teacher. In reality, the truth is that becoming an instructor requires (learned) skill. No one is expected to be a flawless speaker or to be a know-all on everything about yoga when you start out teacher training. That’s why you are trying to learn those skills.

The best part about training to be an instructor is shattering those doubts and coming to realize that you are capable and those doubts in your head were lying the whole time. There are those who used to think they would never be able to turn a yoga instructor. Now, to their own surprise, they can’t imagine doing anything else.

You will always remain a student. So remain present in your now. Respect the breakthroughs on and off the mat but don’t pursue them; they will present themselves when the student is ready. Even when you think you don’t have enough time to practice, try and make it your top priority. Inspire those you love to come to your mats. You should definitely invest in a good mat whatever be the style of yoga you practice because you are surely worth it.
