Meizu M3: A Beautiful Smartphone Offer Good Performance Under 10k

Still unpopular in global arena, Meizu has made quite an impression with its mind-boggling range of smartphones. The company has created some exquisite masterpieces (MX and Pro), but it is the m series which has given Meizu the rise it always wanted. First, M2 and M2 Note and now their elder siblings, this is where the company has done the good work and offered best possible value at lowest price tag.

The latest addition into the m series, M3 Note makes a promising smartphone with good looks and strong internals. The handset ships at a price just under INR 10,000, but it is that spectacular profile that makes Meizu stand out in the highly competitive budget phone market. M3 Note has clearly got us intrigued with its character and here’s what we appreciate about this beauty!

Design and Build

With a sturdy metal body and a clean profile, Meizu M3 Note makes a great first impression. The handset fits nicely in one hand, and boasts 6000 series aluminium on the back and a sleek cover on the front panel. It makes a decent package with balanced proportions and looks fairly premium with aesthetically incorporated antenna lines on the back and an elongated home-button that features a snappy fingerprint scanner, just like OnePlus 2 and other high-end devices. On whole, we like the M3 Note, except for the part where it feels a little hefty at 163 grams.

Display and Visual Experience

If you’re looking for a vivid and crisp viewing experience, Meizu M3 note is not to disappoint you. The handset packs a super-impressive 5.5-inch 1080p display and endows picture-perfect visuals, better than most devices in this price bracket. The screen looks fairly bright and sharp in broad day light and adjusts well in lowlight conditions. It creates an ideal ecosystem for movie-buffs, and looks stunning with 2.5D glass on the top and thin bezels. If you’re shopping for a vibrant display on a tight budget, this one might just live up to your expectations.

Hardware and Performance

Gamers and performance lovers will love the fact that Meizu packs top-notch internals with an equally well-optimized software. The dual-SIM based device ships with MediaTek’s latest in the line, Helio P10 octa-core processor running four ARM Cortex-A53 cores at 1.8GHz and other four at 1.0GHz. The 64-bit chipset holds enough power for seamless work and play and makes a decent impression with 2/3GB of RAM and 16/32GB of on-board storage. It easily endures heavy usage, and also includes a hybrid SIM card slot which can be used as a microSD card slot to expand internal storage.

Overall, the performance is smooth and snappy, and is at par with most phones in this price bracket. You cannot expect flagship level gaming performance from a phone of this price, but that does not mean M3 Note will disappoint you any sorts. Mali-T860MP2 GPU does the job nicely on this beauty!

Software and UI

The software on Meizu M3 Note is smooth and snappy, but unfortunately, it is still not at par with vanilla Android or other custom skins. M3 Note brings Flyme 5.1 UI on the top of Android 5.1 Lollipop, and boasts a fully localized ecosystem with less chunk and more of native apps from Google. The interface is fast and straightforward, and can definitely get better to take on the likes of other highly touted skins such as, MIUI and TouchWiz.

Camera

Meizu M3 Note bears a 13-megapixel camera with phase detection autofocus and dual-tone flash. On the other side, there’s a 5MP unit. These shooters look pretty competent on paper, but in real life, M3 Note does not deliver the goods, at least on the photography front. The camera gives decent shots in day light, but in dark, it’s not even close to what we say is a good camera!

Images taken from this camera lack detail and exhibit an unnatural glow, while videos recorded are quite decent but only good day light. Focus doesn’t work reliably and might witness some delays while capturing live moments or fast moving objects.

The only thing good in this camera setup was the 5-megapixel front-facing shooter with f/2.0 aperture. It landed some decent wide angled selfies, and performed far better than the main unit.

Connectivity

When it comes to connectivity, Meizu endows top-notch performance with the basic suite of options (Wi-FI, A-GPS, Bluetooth 4.1, 3G, and 4G LTE) and highly advanced biometric scanning. The fingerprint scanner mixed with its home-button unlocks the phone within half a second, and keeps all your data protected from unauthorized access. Moreover, on 4G, it gives you blazing fast surfing experience, with downloads up to 150Mbps and uploads up to 50Mbps. It supports Indian LTE bands as well.

Battery Life

Power efficiency has always been a strong point of Meizu smartphones. Whether it’s the m series or the flagship Pro series, they all have delivered at least an entire day even after hours of gaming, multitasking, and continuous video playback. Meizu M3 Note continues the same good work of its predecessors. The device ships with a humongous 4100 mAh non removable battery, and handles heavy usage quite easily. It boasts tremendous power saving capabilities with Flyme 5.1 OS and keeps everything up and running, even on the go.

Final Word

To sum things up, we can say, Meizu M3 Note is an exquisite masterpiece to fit in the sub-10k price bracket. The handset has a lot on offer and can easily pit against smartphones that are already swaying in the budget segment. Yes, Meizu isn’t as popular as renowned giants and M3 Note has its share of issues, but this isn’t the worst deal that you can grabs for INR 9,999. 3 gigs of RAM, latest processor from MediaTek, and extremely impressive 4100 mAh battery, it all boards well for Meizu and for buyers who are shopping on a fixed budget.
