Hi, what are you looking for?

Twitter

To Tweet or Retweet. That’s the Question

So you just received a tweet and you think it’s the most awesome thing you’ve read this week so far. Certainly, it’s something worth passing on to you all of your followers! Well, there is some good news: Twitter has changed the way retweets are handled and it’s awesome.

Hold on tight, and get ready for a crash course in retweeting, how it’s changed, and why you should do it.

What’s A Retweet?

Maybe you don’t use Twitter too often (or at all), and thus are not familiar with all of the options open to you. Well, a retweet is when you receive a tweet and decide that you want to send it along to your followers; it’s that simple.

If you’re more of a Facebook person than you are a Twitter user, then consider it the latter’s analog to the Share command.

Retweeting means more incentive to share

The Old Way of Retweeting

Once upon a time, if you wanted to retweet a particularly good tweet, you sent it along without any decent chance for including a comment of your own. Oh, maybe you could squeeze one in there along with the original tweet, but more often than not, there simply wasn’t enough room.

The problem is, sometimes people really want to add a comment of their own, or some kind of explanation or qualifier.

How Twitter Has Changed Things

Nowadays when you retweet, you are sent to another window and given 116 characters in which to place your own message/commentary. Sure, it’s not the traditional 140, but it’s a whole lot better than it used to be. At least now you have a little more wiggle room, and you can sort of emulate Facebook and Google Plus when you’re sharing a cool tweet.

The article “How To Retweet With A Comment In 3 Simple Steps” gives you all of the information you need to know in order to take full advantage of this new feature. And while we’re on the subject of Twitter education, check out “4 Things You Should Never Share on Social-Networking Sites Like Facebook and Twitter” for some things that you need to avoid doing.

How the New Feature Affects You

With your newfound abilities for retweeting, you may wonder how this changes things. Well, for starters, you may actually find it easier to retweet cool stuff instead of creating your own original tweets, especially if you’re short on time and yet want to make sure that your followers know that you haven’t fallen off the face of the Earth. It’s nice to have options.

Also, speaking of maintaining the goodwill of your followers, the extra text feature will help you establish more clarity with your retweets. By having a small note accompanying the original retweet, it can head off any misunderstanding or misinterpretation, and that means fewer headaches and less drama.

Of course, you may find yourself relying overly much on retweeting, so be careful of that. At the end of the day, there’s nothing like sending off stuff that you came up with yourself.
