E3 2015: Is Mobile the Way Forward?

After all the hype in the months leading up to June, it’s hard to believe that E3 2015, the world’s biggest technology conference, has come to an end once again.

This year’s conference, taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Centre between June 16 and June 18, saw some of the biggest names in the industry displaying their newest updates and product releases.

There were a lot of treats for fans of some of the wackiest games out there at the moment. For example, over at Microsoft, the official trailer for Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, was unveiled. The game will be available on PlayStation 4 and PC in the near future.

Other standout moments included the long-awaited release of Fallout 4 from Bethesda. Fans were greeted with a whole new host of gameplay options, including a new female avatar, and third or first person playing methods. As Studio Director Todd Howard put it: “Player freedom remains our absolute number one goal.”

This is probably the incentive, then, behind Fallout 4’s other new feature: a mobile game named Fallout Shelter. The game is available on general release at the App Store now, and allows players to create their own “vault” in keeping with the themes of the console game.

Bethesda are just one of many games producers that are now embracing the mobile gaming genre. Throughout the years, one field of mobile gaming that has grown exponentially in popularity is that of iGaming, allowing players to move away from traditional gambling or casino methods and play games for real money on their mobiles or tablets. This has proven particularly successful for Uptown Aces, whose online games, featuring table games and slots, are even more accessible with their mobile optimised sites.

So why is it now that developers are turning towards the mobile market? Certainly the opportunity for making money is huge – in the US alone, the mobile gaming industry is worth $2.61 billion, whereas on a worldwide scale, it’s worth an incredible $10.58 billion.

It’s no wonder, then, that many games developers are following in the footsteps of Bethesda and deciding to go mobile. Indeed, this year’s E3 conference served to highlight some of the most exciting technology out there, including wearable headsets. However, the resounding message this year was that there’s one piece of technology that may be a few years old now, but isn’t showing any signs of stopping – and that’s mobile.
