Sony BM10 Bluetooth Music Receiver Review

BM10

First things first- this is a fantastic combo straight up- I haven’t been able to find a standalone BT music receiver to hook up my stereo that comes with all of the things the BM10 has in a relatively affordable price. There is nothing out there that comes with all these features at this price. It is worth the week I spent finding it. Nokia had made an apt-X adapter but you can’t buy it anymore, and the device never had NFC. Rocketfish made one but it’s not in store, and it apparently had BT connectivity issues from user reviews. Harman Kardon made a Bluetooth music receiver, but it use HARMAN TrueStream connectivity instead of commonly utilized apt-X ,and no NFC combined. Logitech’s BT streamer also doesn’t use APT-X.

Sound Quality

Sound quality wise, this is fantastic. I stream from my Note II to my Logitech Z5300 speakers and connected everything with a Creative XMod external soundcard. I can’t tell the difference between wired and wireless on this. The apt-X codec is just as fantastic as it out to be. You only need to worry about your source for quality, not whether the BT is taking away from your experience.

Pairing and Connection

Connectivity is great- no problems walking around my condo unit and cutting out. It was easy to pair up, and the NFC functionality is perfect for this. I come home after work, tap my phone on the BM10 and my phone auto connects to the media. When I leave, I tap it and it turns off media streaming. Nice and easy to use, and it doesn’t leave the bluetooth endlessly on trying to pair. I’m glad that the unit has no issues with streaming. I’ve heard lots of problems with Airplay and interference in condo units because of overlapping Wi-Fi. This doesn’t have any problems like that.

Summary

Sony BM10 Bluetooth music receiver is good in sound quality and broadcast range. It has also a convenient pairing and controlling function through NFC chip. It’s just a simple black unit all plastic. Nice design that just melts away into your living room decor with no gaudiness or anything, can’t demand more for this little device. Definitely recommended! Glad Sony made it. I’d buy this again in a heart beat.

It seems like an amazing receiver.

Two things seemed to bug me a little though. One is how I can make sure that someone else can’t just pair with it and play whatever music they like on my speakers.
The second is in regards to phone calls, mainly what happens when I get a call when the phone is paired and playing music via the receiver. Does my call get broadcasted through the speakers?

Maybe somebody can illuminate these two points. Thanks.
