It is easy to lose your temper if you are constantly being bothered with unsolicited telephone calls just after you have got home from a busy day at work. Imagine how an elderly pensioner living alone will feel. It is not annoyance that they will feel. It may actually be as extreme as fear. Certainly there are ways to minimise these calls but it is a slow process to get every unsolicited call blocked unless you can find a really effective system. They do exist and it is worth ensuring you find one.
Caller ID is superficially effective but callers can withhold their numbers if they wish. Once you pick up the phone to such calls then you should be careful about divulging any information about yourself and ideally be able to curtail the call quickly and have a similar call stopped from ever getting through again.
Technology
Technology allows call centres to ring lists of numbers and redial when there is no answer. It means that ignoring an unidentified number will only be of limited success. It will come back time and again. If you answer you may even find no one on the other end if the call centre has insufficient staff to man every line. The result will be silence or an automated message. You may even find that you are being contacted by a fax machine that wants to send you a written message. You may not recognise the tone that a fax machine makes but the whole thing is no less annoying.
Verification
A nuisance call blocker will never block 100% of calls because you will want to take calls from family and friends; why else would you have a telephone? It means that you will need a system where your approved numbers have been verified and can get through immediately. At the same time, every unsolicited call should be stopped if at all possible. You should not divulge your name and address to anyone who actually rings and opens a conversation. By all means ask them for details; it will help later with any blocking procedure.
Effective
If you can find a system that already has a database of many numbers which are blocked and will regularly update itself as more numbers are blocked by every member within the system, you will quickly dispose of many of these unwanted calls. When everyone within the system is regularly reporting nuisance numbers and they are subsequently blocked, the quantity of nuisance numbers which can no longer get through to unsuspecting subscribers rockets.
If everyone gets involved in blocking these sales and marketing numbers, the companies involved will gradually realise that the telephone is becoming less and less effective as a means of generating business.
