Using Tumblr for Business

A lot of people who are not familiar with Tumblr suddenly found themselves learning about it with Yahoo’s acquisition of the popular micro-blogging platform. Although, at first, there were concerns among Tumblr bloggers that Yahoo was going to make sweeping changes in the site, including the removal of adult material, Yahoo maintains that Tumblr will continue to run as an independent entity.

Tumblr

Ironically, very few businesses have seen the potential of Tumblr as a marketing platform. Looking into marketing on site is certainly worth looking into, considering it has a large youth demographic (age 25 and younger). Another advantage to using Tumblr to market your business is that it is very simple to use.

Here is a guide on how you can use Tumblr for your small business –

1) Set up an account

The only way to learn how to use Tumblr is by signing up first for a free account. Your first Tumblr blog will also serve as your default blog and cannot be deleted without deleting your entire account. When you make that first blog, you must already have a name for your blog in mind, as well as a clear picture of the content that you will put in it. Once you have set up your default blog, you can make additional side blogs for your business.

2) Familiarize yourself with the Tumblr dashboard

The Tumblr dashboard consists of 7 icons (Text, Photo, Quote, Link, Chat, Audio, and Video) which will allow you to easily create posts based on those headings. For example, if you click Text, it will open a window wherein you can write articles. While other reviewers of the site have been claiming that there is a limitation to the length of the article, this is not true. Fanfiction writers have been able to post 20 pages of stories in one text post alone, thus disproving that there is a text limit. For long posts though, you need to learn how to use the “Read More” function so that you can chop the post as it appears in the tags and then link them to your much longer post. You can also load Photos, sound files, and Youtube and Vimeo videos related to your business in your Tumblr.

3) Posting on the Tags

Whenever you make a post on Tumblr, you will see a portion in your text window below marked as “Tag”. Tags are keywords to which your post belongs. For example, if you are writing about food, you can place it under the “#food” tag (just typing in the word “food” and clicking enter will have the system automatically adding the hashtag). This tag will, in turn, place your post in the tag thread. Thankfully, the recent upgrade to Tumblr will show you the popular tags. By placing your posts in the popular tags, you will get people to read your posts and, hopefully, “Like” and “Reblog” them. It is also recommended that you check out the tags. There is a search tag function at the right hand corner of your dashboard. If you find a tag that is related to your business, click the “Track” button beside it so you can track the tag.

4) Follow, Like and Reblog

One way by which you can attract attention toward your Tumblr blog is by following other people. If you happen to find people whose posts you like and/or the topic is related to your business, click the heart, which will automatically register as a “Like”. You also have the option of reblogging the post into your own Tumblr by clicking the arrows icon. The nice thing about reblogging is that it maintains attribution to the original source. Reblogging is especially important if you are using photos from other sources. If you have liked or reblogged certain individuals’ posts often, it is recommended that you follow them. It should be mentioned that a lot of Tumblr posters, out of courtesy, also follow the people who follow them. So, this is a good way to generate traffic toward your Tumblr blog and later to your business site.

There are other procedures by which you can utilize Tumblr for your business. But for now, it is best to familiarize yourself with the micro-blogging platform by posting articles and photos before taking the serious plunge into Tumblr marketing.
