Recycling Old CDs and DVDs

CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray CDs and so on, are some of the hallmarks of the twenty-first century. Or so they would make you believe considering that recent technology advancement has seen sudden changes in what might have been the norm only in the past decade. This is true particularly because today these items are fast becoming rather obsolete. Large CD retailers are closing down, CDs and DVDs alike are running out of fashion and even their corresponding electronic players are running out of stock.

Today, films and movies that would normally be watched on DVDs can now be streamed online through services such as Netflix. Likewise, games and music are available on online services such as OnLive and Pandora respectively. However, when one decides to replace his or her CDs or DVDs with online streaming, there is always the question of what to do with the old equipment. For example, do you just leave your unused CDs, DVD and Blu-Ray discs lying around the home or office? If the answer is no, then would it be better to bury them in the ground considering that plastics don’t decompose easily let alone plastics that are contain aluminum and similar potentially harmful materials? I thought not. So what then should be done? Recycle! How? Here’s how.

Join A Local Recycling Group

There is probably a local community recycling groups or charitable organisations somewhere around you. Such groups tend to have good recycling contacts that accept old and used discs for safe disposal or re-use.

Sell To Private Companies

While a used CD or DVD may not have much financial value, they may still be re-used by others. As a result, some private companies such as Music Magpie provide services that give people the opportunity to exchange unwanted discs (including DVDs, CDs, games and Blu-Ray players) for cash by following some ‘simple’ steps.

Exchange With Friends and Family

If you are unable to join a recycling group or sell your old and unused discs to private companies, then you might be better off by exchanging with friends and family members who may have something you need. However, you may consider giving the old discs to them in cases where you are unable to get something in exchange. Goodluck in making our environment a better place!

I never thought about joining a recycling group, but why not. I got a bunch of old CD’s and DVD’s just occupying storage space. I might give them to charity, because my junk can be someone else’s treasure. We all need to work a bit harder for a better world.
