Antivirus Test: Determining Your Security Performance

antivirus testing

You surely have an antivirus that guards your system, but how can you be sure that it is working as effectively as you want it to? Well, you need to make an antivirus test to ensure that you are not missing out on any security patches and to check out whether all the plugins are up to date and so on, so that you can find out any vulnerable areas in your software. Too many times, we just expect our antivirus spyware to work on its own and think that once we have installed it, it is safe and can give our computers the ultimate protection. However, many applications do a very poor job of protecting your computer against spyware, in spite of their tall claims. All kinds of spyware, such as popup and fake AV products appear in your system, while the AV just sits there doing just about nothing to protect you. There are many tools available for checking or testing the effectiveness of your Antivirus program, consisting of files that need to be downloaded and run to test the ability of the antivirus software.

Importance of Testing

There are many test files that can be downloaded in order to test the antivirus program. These are text files that contain harmless code and the antivirus program will respond to this in the same way it would to a real virus.  It is important to periodically test your antivirus software with antivirus test software, as it not only stops computer viruses but also addresses several other threats. The antivirus software can be the most important and essential part that keeps the life of your desktop or Mac going. Without effective antivirus software, it would be like driving a car without a seatbelt. The testing software ensures that all the recent updates are available along with the latest virus definitions. The default settings of the program are usually used while testing the antivirus program.

Areas of Testing

An antivirus test can test several areas of your antivirus software, such as the boot time or the shut down time. It can also check out the scan time and the performance of MS Office and decoding of ITunes, for instance. The testing will also be able to check out the media multitasking features using synthetic bench markers and scan the system actively for viruses. The tests also take into consideration the performance degradation that occurs during deep scanning done by the antivirus program. The CPU capabilities of the system are also tested. The antivirus test can also test the scanning speed of your antivirus software. Your program is compared with other antivirus applications to measure its efficiency. The boot timing is also tested, as it is seen that the lesser time it takes for booting and for loading the antivirus program, the lesser the impact of the software application on the boot time.
