Logos & Desserts: Little Known Facts About Android

Exactly like the business VoIP phone, Android operating system is one of the most talked about topics these days not only in the world of technology and communications, but consumers as well.  A number of operating systems are usually popping out to try their hand at competing against Android. Unfortunately it appears that Android is sufficiently strong to cope and outdo its competitors. People know little about the Android operating system except for the obvious fact that it promotes more applications than any other OS. Here are a few little known facts and answers to much of your Android-related questions. Most people think that Android operating system was developed by Google. Android was created by Rich Miner and Andy Rubin of Android Inc. in the year 2003; and in 2005 Google bought it for $50 million. Therefore, Android technology was not originally from Google, they merely developed and enhanced the OS after buying it.

Dream is the first ever released Android from the manufacturer HTC. Most of us think that the first Android phone came from Samsung since it has quite a lot of phone models which support the featured operating system. Jan Dawson, an analyst from Ovum Telecoms, said that “Google releases the Android source code to manufacturers, which then customize it for their devices. Carriers, too, have to work with the manufacturers to create versions that are compatible with their networks. And then there’s testing that both parties have to do. Because companies have limited resources, they have to give some phones priority in getting newer Android software over others (The New York Times, Why Does Samsung Get Android Updates So Fast? 2012)”.

The logo is actually from a game in the 1990’ called Gauntlet: The Third Encounter. If you compare the Android logo and the one from the Atari game, you will see some similarities and a number of differences as well. Google has not released a statement regarding their Android logo and no known copyright infringement cases have been publicized. In terms of color, Android is an apple-green shade whereas the Atari game character, also named ‘Android’, is gray with a horizontal blue streak near the upper portion. If you take a closer look at Google’s Android, notice that the lower portion of its body is shaped like an ice cream popsicle with its rectangular body and two legs that are shaped like popsicle sticks. Whereas Atari’s Android is shaped like a bug with a round-like body.

If you hear people, especially techie individuals, talk about terms like ‘cupcake’ and ‘éclair’, bear in mind that they are not talking about desserts. Google named their Android versions based on a sweet dessert which includes Froyo (better known as frozen yoghurt), Gingerbread and Ice Cream. Apart from the obvious fact that they are named after mouth-watering desserts, they are also in alphabetical order and the latest version, Android 4.1, is named Jelly Bean. Google has not given any kind of explanation regarding their Android names however; a spokesperson from their end said that it is an ‘internal team thing’. People will just have to be satisfied with this statement and enjoy the delicious names of the versions.

A little fun fact about Android according to research, there are more men users of Android compared to women users. In addition to that, about sixty percent of Android users are aged 34 years old and below.

Me too! A lot of big corporations get a bad rapport when people aren’t aware of little details like this. I especially love when comapanies have funny twitter campaigns.
