Google’s Project Glass Is Now A Reality

project glass2

Google has been talking about its Project Glass (“Google Glasses”) for some years now, but as of February 2013, Project Glass has become a reality. Google is now inviting “bold, creative individuals” to become a “Glass Explorer.” In other words, Google is looking for people to beta-test the prototype glasses.

You can be the first to own Glass

Only a few lucky people will get to become Glass Explorers. To do so, you’ll need to tell Google what you would do if you had Glass, using the hashtag #ifihadglass. Your application must be fewer than 50 words and you can include photos and a short video with it. You must be 18 years or older and you must live in the United States.

Oh, and you have to buy the glasses at a cost of $1500 plus tax and attend a special pick-up experience, in person, in New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles.

So I have to pay Google to test their products for them?

Yes, that’s the deal. Listen, do you want the glasses or not? Google has the glasses, Google makes the rules.

What are these glasses anyway?

project glass3

They’re smart glasses. They use a transparent LCD display to beam information right into your field of vision, like a smartphone that never goes away. You can talk to them. You can take photos with them. You can get maps and directions. You can send messages and make calls. In short, you can do everything you would with a smartphone, but directly from the glasses.

This video shows you how amazing your life will become if you wear the glasses. Just like the people in this video, you will spend the rest of your life jumping out of aeroplanes, riding rollercoasters and attending non-stop parties. That’s got to be worth $1500 surely?

Will they make me look like an idiot?

Possibly. Or they might make you look amazingly cool. Remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

#ifihadglass

The initial bunch of applications indicate that people are not taking up this offer with the kind of serious it deserves. #ifihadglass I would:

  • Become an ambassador for cyborgs.
  • Shoot pictures of my junk.
  • Keep it in a drawer with other gadgets.
  • Try to look cool while gobbling motion sickness pills.
  • Look at cats all day.
  • Try hard not to get mugged.

Why are you still here?

What are you waiting for? With such low quality applications so far, you could easily become one of the winners. Click here to find out more and become a Glass Explorer too!

The glasses look great, unfortunately since I live in the UK, flying to the USA and back would likely cost more than twice the price of the glasses!

Also I already wear glasses, I wonder if you can have prescription lenses fitted to the Google glasses? Or whether us shortsighted people will have to resort to contact lenses in order to be able use them?

NickD, I wear glasses too. I suspect that a lot of work is needed to make these glasses practical, to support prescription lenses, etc. That’s probably why Google is opening up this next stage of development.

    great article Steve,
Google glass project is the most practical and most advance project which seems like the technology of future, but Google did it very well.
it’s a matter of fact that google X-labs are most innovative and most advance platform today. i’ve heard of their other projects and they seems very fantistic..
here is the list of them…
    1. space elevator
    2. self-driving car
    3. a neural network that uses semi-supervised learning,
    4. enabling speech recognition and extraction of objects from video

they seems the science fiction concepts but Google is doing them right now.
    nice post by the way.

Marketers are definitely getting a kick out of them, that’s for sure. Some are even wondering if they’ll replace smartphones.
