How To Improve A Website’s Loading Speed

Remember when you were struggling to open a website and your slow internet connection made you wait long. At that time, it must have clicked your mind that if the loading of the website was quicker; it would have been outstanding. Major search engines such as Bing, Yahoo, and Google surely consider the loading speed of your website while giving rankings. Furthermore, faster loading Websites can ensure that viewers will stay longer thereby reducing bounce rates.

There are a lot of things to consider while creating, designing and maintaining a good and fast loading website. Similarly, there are a lot of strategies on web optimization that can help you in improving your site loading time. These tips and strategies are related to programming, designing and maintenance of a website.

Strategies on Loading Time and Web Optimization:

  • First step is to optimize your website’s HTML code. You must make sure that there are no unnecessary tags and broken links in your web pages. Try to build your website free from errors as errors on the web pages make the website’s speed slow.
  • Next strategy for improving the opening speed of your website is to reduce the scripts, flash and graphics used in your web pages. The graphics and flash make big contributions in the loading speed of a website. Therefore, avoid using a lot of heavy images, flash and graphics and try to keep your website simple and professional. Using background colors instead of heavy images is a smart option to reduce the size of your site.
  • Try to optimize the heavy files to a maximum extent. In software editors like firework and flash, there are some options available for decreasing the size of a website by optimizing the scripts, flash files and heavy images.
  • The next tip is maximizing the area of content. This improves readability of your web pages and reduces loading time. Instead of making your website bulky with heavy graphics and flash, you should switch to simple and light designs for a fast loading website.
  • You should smartly spread out the content to improve the loading speed of your website. If your content pages are so long, then you should chop them down into separate logic parts so that the size of your site can be kept low. Graphic buttons look good but they add greatly to the size of a website. It is far better to use text links instead of graphic buttons. These links serve the purpose of graphic buttons perfectly and you can also make them trendy by using CSS styles.
  • SSI files or the server side includes files once been called by the server resides in the cache so that on any subsequent request the web page loads quickly. Going for Div tags instead of tables cut down the size of a site. This helps in reducing the loading time of a website. If tables are essential to use then make sure they are of good designs.

The loading time of a website has a direct impact on its potential customers. The longer the loading time takes, the lesser is the chance to have a customer thus, increasing the bounce rate of a website. In these days, people are very particular of their time; hence, they would not want to wait too long. The ideas listed are wonderful. They truly are helpful to reduce the loading time. I love the idea of using complementary background colors rather than adding up a lot of images which requires some time to load.

Faster loading site will get more traffic, higher ranking and lower bounce rate. The usage of Flash, scripts and graphics should be kept minimal to get enhanced performance of the website. Slow internet connection users should always be kept in mind when building a website. Nice Tips:)

Revising HTML helped my website out. Also when we were just starting, we almost flooded the front page with flash and graphics we thought made the site “look nice”. What’s the point of having a nice looking site if it never loads, right? Haha! Thanks for the article Nabeel

You are right Luis. I was working on a big website SEO. There were on first page and on top for most of the keywords however their website used to take about 1 minute to load. There were not making sales and complaining me. I analyzed and found out the main problem is loading speed of their website. I tested one more strategy. We increased the memory of their website and dats it. Problem solved.. So it’s a new lesson for all of us.. Thanx for commenting mate.

Thanks for these great tips. I’ve been struggling with a higher bounce rate lately and I just figured that this is mainly because my site takes time to load. I’m checking my html code now for irregularities and I’ll take this chance to de-clutter too.

Thanx for your comments Joy. I visited your site and i think the speed is not bad at the moment. The rule of thumb is that your website should load completely within 30 seconds.

I would suggest some important things to you.

1- Your website design is not attractive as it should be. The best background color in a gardening related website is white background and some green touch. Check out this website “http://www.arborpride.com.au/”. See the background color and the way green color has been used in different parts of the website. Light colors in backgrounds are i would say not so much attractive.

2- You should focus on getting traffic on your website. Your website PR is 2 but your Alexa rank is nothing. This means there is very few or no traffic to your website. I am currently doing all thr SEO for the website i mentioned above and this website is on first page of google.com.au for all the keywords. I used the Australian forums to build traffic to this website. I searched about 200 and then started link building on them.

3- Use banner slides to show your customers instead of using only a simple image on the front. Hope this helps. Hope this helps.

I agree with these valuable tips. I will give a try to the script and html portion of your article. I have banner slides on my website. Do you think that can also be a cause of disturbed website loading speed?

      Hi Cameron,

Thanx for appreciation. If you banner slides are too heavy for example, your banner slides are made up of 2D or 3D images or the images are themselves very heavy then this can affect your website loading speed.
