Internet Security For Your Business

People who own their own businesses have many different areas of responsibility. Not only do they have to guide the strategic direction of the company to ensure it is a success, but they often have to wear different hats for the back office functions such as keeping an eye on the accounts, paying the salaries, insuring property and vehicles and making sure the premises are secure.

Of course, as well as the physical security of your building and the stock contained within it, there is also internet security to consider. Today, with more and more of our daily lives being conducted online, and the majority of business transactions taking place via the internet, it has become even more important to make sure your business computers have the appropriate anti-virus software installed.

And with the development of smartphone and Android tablet technology, and the increased use of mobile devices to connect to the internet, these all need protecting against viruses and Trojans too. Mobile security has become as vital as having Internet security for your desktop PC.

The trouble is that people tend to assume it won’t be them that will fall prey to a hacker’s virus, and until they do there is a reluctance to get an internet security subscription sorted out. Only when it happens and you lose valuable data or it is stolen from your hard disk, does the imperative become apparent.

For many businesses, it’s not just their information that they put at risk, but also lots of sensitive information about their clients. Business files being infected by a virus or Trojan could be really damaging to a company’s reputation. So, in a way, getting good internet security installed is as much about maintaining good customer relations as protecting your own business data.

So, now you realise how necessary internet security is, you need to make sure you have some installed immediately. Fortunately there is plenty available; many programmes can be downloaded from the internet, either as a free trial or a paid subscription.

If you have a range of devices that you use to connect to the internet, it’s best to get a licence that will cover those different devices. For example, some providers offer a licence for up to five different devices so that you can get Windows antivirus, Mac antivirus, and Android and smartphone antivirus all under one license.

Probably the best way forward is to download a trial version and check you’re happy with it, before signing up for a paid subscription.

One of the common mistakes that many businesses make in producing an Internet security policy is to make the policy run to tens of pages, and to pepper the policy with legalese and technical terms, and turn the policy into a long list of threats.

The aim of your policy should not be to produce a policy that only the best legal minds can understand, and it shouldn’t be written to worry your employees into thinking that they’re not allowed to use the Internet.

Your security policy should be there to help your employees understand the threats the business faces and to give them help and advice. Ideally test the policy out on someone not connected with your business, ask them to read it and see if it helps or hinders. If it helps then you’re on the right path if it confuses them then you need to have a rewrite.
