Best Combat Video Games Of All Time

Enthusiasts always have an opinion about what should top the list of best video games. Of course, their choices are supplemented by the games’ USPs and attractions. Here is a list of the best shooting video games of all time – you may have played some or all of them.

Call of Duty series

Focusing primarily on the combined arms used during the Second World War, and infantry in its early editions, the Call of Duty series has extended its horizons with advanced instalments. Showcasing arguably the widest collection of weapons, stretching over from the times of World War II to conflicts in modern times, it is one of the favourites of many a shooting games enthusiast. The multiplayer mode of the game is the franchise’s reason for fame and success, but the revolutionary game raised the bar with features such as mini-games like Zombie Nazis. Although crossbows and knives make appearances, the firepower is responsible for attracting the attention of millions of gamers across the world. And boy, do they love the firepower!

GoldenEye 007

Among the games that saw the movie disappoint, GoldenEye was credited for being among the most influential games in the first-person shooters category of its time. During its time of release, when most games featured unrealistic environments, this one was designed with an air of realism, keeping away from the surroundings introduced by the likes of Doom in previous years. Though most of the guns that feature in the game are allocated fictional names such as the “KF7 Soviet” or “AR-33”, they are based on their real-world counterparts, except the FN P90’s unrealistic depiction.

Medal of Honor series

Focusing on the pros of the Second World War initially, also known as “the Greatest Generation”, the Medal of Honor series changed its focus to the soldiers in Afghanistan today, following its reboot in 2010. The Guinness Book of World Records recognised it as the best selling game in the first-person shooting games category in history, in 2008. The weaponry is sure to blow the minds of history buffs, with the portrayal of arms from World War II being all-so-real.

Cabela’s Big Game Hunter

For those who love the idea of hunting, but find it hard to brave the wild, this game makes for an intriguing one. Shooting a grizzly bear that is snarling at you never got better. With its life-like portrayal of arms such as the Remington Model 700P/700PSS, realistic interaction with the wildlife and environment, and a smooth gameplay, this is one of the best games ever in the first-person shooter hunting realm.

America’s Army

Putting entertainment aside, this game holds significant value as it was used by the army of the United States to recruit and teach several codes of conduct and military tactics. It has been reported that soldiers used the tactics they had learnt in the game, on the field. Featuring the M16A2 rifle, the game allows the user to switch from short bursts to single-shot, or vice-versa. To gain sniper privileges, you will have to be an exceptional marksman before being granted one, since it’s not everyone’s cup of tea to be a sniper. Players can make their way up the ranks, courtesy of an honor system that depends on teamwork. Among the most realistic games in terms of health, your life may end if you don’t call for a medic after being hit by a shot!

@Tina I think it is possible for such video game to be developed based on our technology these days. Among the video games you had mentioned on your list I think Call of Duty is the best.

GoldenEye 007 was THE game of my teens on N64! I absolutely loved that game. I know Halo was enormous too, however, 007 was the greatest combat game of all time in my opinion!

Call of Duty 2 is Great fun and still thriving online, just doesn’t have the charm of the first one. I enjoyed both 1 and 2, but their campaigns were pretty forgettable, despite them being fun and having several great moments.

The only thing more addicting, more expensive and life-ruining than heroin is FFXIV. Beautiful skills and great combat animations. One of the best MMO RPGS I’ve played.

I’ve played all most all of the series of Call of Duty and Medal of Honor. COD will definitely be no. 1 for me. These games have great campaigns, stories , and environment.
