The Power of the Web: Bringing Down Corrupt Governments

The search engine giant Google recently hosted a Big Tent conference in Watford in which various organisations and key speakers attended to talk about the web; and it was revealed just how powerful the online platform is. Google’s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, claimed the World Wide Web makes it harder for governments to censor information from their citizens and he went as far as saying that it can bring down corrupt authorities.

The leader stated that the influence of the internet will force governments to become more transparent with their populations and as more and more people use the platform, it will become more difficult for dictators to stifle information from young minds.

China is an underlying example of a country that has censored certain information from its people but Mr Schmidt believes that openness and transparency in government is key to achieve a world that is more democratic.

Further instances noted at the conference include the Libyan uprising where the web played a role in promoting freedom as well as ‘hearing’ from a new generation of aspiring middle class people from Indonesia and India. He claims that as people in developing countries gain smartphones and engage with the web, it will be the central method to which they are educated. But he did argue that Google will do more to provide a better service to users in terms of regulating pornography on the internet.

The internet can have a huge influence on your business and if optimised properly it can reap tons of revenue. As mentioned above, more and more consumers are accessing the platform to share, educate, and interact with other people as well as brands. If you want to achieve success this year, it is vital that you boost your presence online and take advantage of its power.

I guess that nobody can argue about the importance and influence of the web. Its most important characteristic is the freedom of speech and this is where oppressive governments are trying to intervene and censor the thoughts and feelings of their citizens, but it seems that the web is more powerful than them.

web is indeed a very significant tool where there is complete freedom of speech. there are no restrictions. a person can freely put down his views, ideas and comments in front of the people who support the thought. at such a platform it would become easy to bring to light the malpractices followed by the government of any country. web has one more advantage in that case, a person can fake his identity when standing up against the government.

Quick question, one that probably doesn’t need an answer. Is the country specific top level domain redirect (introduced for blogspot domains earlier this year) not intended to help comply with governments wanting to censor information in their own countries?
